yes you must

AnswerIt depends on the denomination of the Church. For example, in Roman Catholic Churches you have to be a baptised and confirmed member of the Church, have received your special 'first commuinon'', have recently gone to confesion, fasted for at least an hour beforehand and be in a 'state of grace' before receiving holy communion. This seems to be the most exclusive attitude of all denominations.

In many other denominations, the requirement is baptism, or that you regularly receive communion in another church or denomination.

However there are also many churches that operate an 'open table' - in that anyone who loves the Lord and accepts Jesus as their Saviour are welcome to receive. My own church (a relatively evangelical Anglican Church) operates such a system as we feel that all who love Jesus, or who are searching for him, are welcome, just as Jesus himself welcomed all who turned to him, baptised by John the Baptist or not.

So I suggest that you ask the minister/priest in the church what hiis attitude is about receiving. However,if you are not baptised, find a Church who will follow the teachings of Jesus (and not of man) and accept you as you are, and baptism, membership and new life in Christ wll follow by the help of the Holy Spirit.

What are the conditions before a person may receive Holy Communion?

You need to be baptized Catholic, and have made your first Holy Communion, you need to be in a state of grace, otherwise, you need to go to confession before receiving Holy Communion. You must be fasting for one hour prior to receiving Holy Communion. If divorced, you need to get an annulment before attempting marriage again. Is taking Holy Communion in a Church better than doing it at home?

Catholic AnswerCatholics do not "take" Holy Communion, they "receive" it. And Church, usually at Mass, is the place and time to receive Our Blessed Lord in the Holy Eucharist. The only time to receive Holy Communion at home is if you are sick, and a priest, deacon, or duly appointed Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist brings Him to you. Any other way or receiving Our Lord, unless specifically approved by your Bishop is not permitted by the Church. Finally, although it is still Holy Communion, it is infinitely better to receive Holy Communion during Mass both because a) just attending Mass, even without Holy Communion, is a great source of grace, b) and, believe it or not, being a Christian means being part of the Body of Christ. Being Christian is a corporate thing, you need to be worshipping with your fellow Christians, and receiving Holy Communion with them. So you are mistaken, it is not better to receive Holy Communion at home, and it is NEVER better to TAKE Holy Communion.

Can you receive Holy Communion if you are married to a divorced Catholic?

Roman Catholic AnswerWhether or not you can receive Holy Communion depends on a number of things, you would need to make an appointment with a priest to talk this over. The person to whom you are married will also have to talk to a priest and arrange to have their marriage submitted to the tribunal to see if it can be annulled. In the meantime, you both need to be living as brother and sister, and go to Confession, then you may receive Holy Communion.

Who often most a catholic need to receive communion?

A Catholic should receive Holy Communion as often as they are in a state of grace and properly prepared to receive Our Blessed Lord in Holy Communion, as much as daily. In rare instances, a Catholic may receive Holy Communion a second time in one day, for a special reason, IF they attend the full Mass at which they receive the second time, and if they are in a state of grace, and properly prepared. Nobody should ever approach the altar to receive Holy Communion if they are not in a state of grace, or if they are not properly prepared, to do so is sacrilege, a serious sin. A Catholic is required to receive Holy Communion at a minimum of once a year, and that should be during the Easter Season, which is one of the reasons that Catholics are *required* to go to confession at least once a year also. However, may I point out that only going to confession once a year would be like changing your underwear and socks only once a year - not a good idea; and receiving Holy Communion only once a year would be like eating only once a year - likewise not a good idea. These are bare minimums to make sure that you don't completely neglect your religious life, they are hardly to be considered normative.

Can a Protestant receive communion in a Catholic church?

Catholic Answer No. First of all, Methodists do not have the Eucharist, they have a memorial service that they commemorate the Last Supper but they do not believe that it actually is the Body and Blood of Christ. Secondly, any real, active participation in a Protestant service in their church is not permitted to a Catholic as we have the fullness of Christ's revelation and we are supposed to be bringing the truth to them and bring them back to the Church, not showing support for error. But they have been baptised, and thus are Christians, so we must show respect and brotherly love, concern, etc.: NOT support for the errors.

Who can take part in holy communion?

People in good standing with their own church, those who normally receive Holy Communion in their own churches. This is as well as Anglicans, who are expected to have prepared for this by prayer and fasting beforehand. Reconciliation (confession) is also available for those who are in need of it.

Should an Usher remove their gloves to receive communion?

They do not need to, receiving Our Blessed Lord on the tongue has been the appropriate and accepted way to receive Holy Communion for centuries. If a person insists on receiving in the hand, and it is allowed in his diocese, then, of course, he must remove his gloves; as must anyone else in a similar position.

What do you have to do to get wine and bread in the Catholic Church?

First off, it is not wine and bread. It has been changed and is the body of Christ. That is probably what is restricting you from receiving communion. The Catholic and Orthodox believe that it had been transfigured, even though it doesn't change form, the bread and wine change in essence. To receive the Eucharist at a Catholic Church, you yourself need to become Catholic and believe in the Transfiguration
