well unless you don't want to have frozen fish then yes.But if you have a deep enough pond they'll just go to the bottom of the pound and wait until the ice melts.

Do you need a pump for koi pond in the winter months?

If you have fish, turtles or other aquatic life in your pond, the pump may need to run all winter to help keep the water warm enough for them. ... Keeping the water from turning to ice also can help prevent damage to the pond from the expanding ice.

Why should you never break the ice on fishponds in cold weather?

Because you'll fall in. Duh. Second answer from an editor: The Fish get all the "oxygen" they need with the ice covering so you don't need to break the ice. The most serious reason you don't break the ice is that young children need to know the pond is icy. They are less likely to play on that ice if they see an entire sheet of ice and if they fall on it they may be saved by the thick ice. If the ice is thin then the children are at risk. It is a good idea to put up some type of barrier around any pond, water fountain or other artificial body of water (pools, etc) during the winter. If there are likely to be toddlers around them their should be a barrier year round. Children cannot tolerate being overly cold or have their lungs filled with water. Many who succumb to hypothermia or drowning can be save but they sadly are often left brain damaged or deaf. One of the other reasons to leave the ice is the pond gets a new amount of fresh water and snow melt on it. The snow is rich in nitrogen and many other compounds that are beneficial to the fish. Did you know more fish lay eggs and successfully have their eggs become fish that survive? This is because the ice protects the new fish from predators. The lakes have an increase in the fish during the winter so that by summer there is a new crop of fish for the fisherman.

How deep does a goldfish pond need to be?

It needs to be atleast 2 ft deep if you want to keep the fish in the cold weather however i would suggest going much deeper to be on the safe size, a small pond can have steep sides to dig to about 3 ft and there will be no problems with the fish in cold weather, other than that it is not important how deep the pond is, as long as they can swim freely.

Why did my fish get frozen in the ice this spring but not last year?

Maybe because it got colder in the pond this year or your fish got sick. Or maybe because your pond isn't deep enough. It needs to be atlas 3 meters deep.

How do you keep pond over winter?

It depends upon how deep the pond is and how thick the ice gets. During frosts in the UK (England) we used to sit a saucepan filled with boiling/hot water on the ice every ten days or so. (Keep replacing the hot water as it cools). This melted a hole in the ice to allow for the exchange of gasses to take place. This may be impossible to do if the weather is too cold. In that case, if the pond is overstocked or not deep enough for the fish to escape from the ice you may suffer heavy losses. Never try to smash through the ice. The heavy vibrations/shock will kill the fish.
