You do not need to be fasting before an ultrasound, however u must drink plenty of fluids, this leaves the kidneys at their largest and easier to see in the ultrasound. Plus by not fasting the kidneys are working like normal while the US is going on.

Yes, you need to fast 6 hours before the exam. Also in order to have a full bladder for the procedure, you should drink at least 16-32 ounces of water 30 mins to an hour before the exam. That is at least one- two water bottles. Then refrain from urinating until after the exam.
