Most broken blood vessels are minor in nature and do not present any significant health risks. However, broken blood vessels may occur anywhere within the body, and may have serious consequences without warning. For example, broken blood vessels can occur in the brain and may cause symptoms such as double vision, speech disruption, weakness, numbness, tingling, and headaches. If you are in doubt, particularly after trauma, see your doctor.

Yes, of course. The burst of a blood vessel could be the cause of a increased pressure (perhaps Glaucoma) or it could indicate a blocked blood vessel. You should seek immediate medical attention to prevent internal bleeding, and any further damage to the eye

2nd Comment:

The above is true, but let me add what my eye doctor told me . . .

"If the blood is in the white part, then you can apply light pressure with a soft cloth for several minutes. Typically, a sizable wedge of eyeball is red, but it is very thin. And scary-looking.

Do not bend over for 4 or 5 days, as this puts pressure into the head's blood vessels, including the eye.

"BUT, if there is pain involved, see an eye doctor. If you keep having these, see an eye doctor. If the blood does not slowly go away in a week to 10 days, see an eye doctor." If the blood is NOT in the white part of your eyeball, see an eye doctor, quickly.

It depends on when the break occurred and how much blood is lost from the vessel. If on the brain a large break can kill.
