∙ 13y agoIt depends from whom the animal was adopted. Places like the SPCA often charge a fee, mostly just to try and cover their expenses from having spayed or neutered the animal, not to make a profit.
Adopting an animal from a private citizen is sometimes free, but more and more conscientious owners are realizing that charging a small price for their animals is more likely to result in an animal finding a good home. The simple fact is that most people who are willing to pay for something, animal or otherwise, are more likely to take better care of it.
