Shampooing twice can lead to damage, and a loss of shine on your hair.

Shampoo is designed to literally "strip" oil off the surface of your hair, with a slightly acidic bath. Once is enough, your hair will be clean, and the mildly acidic wash improves the cuticles ability to lie flat. ergo, be more shiny and tangle less.

If you wash twice on a regular basis, you're exposing your hair to too much of this acidic mixture, so it can dry it out, and cause it to break.

Stylists in salons often shampoo twice because it is difficult to distribute shampoo totally effectively in that laid-back posistion. Normally the first wash focuses solely on your scalp, and the second, the length of your hair. But at home this isn't necessary, as you can do it all in one hit.
