Travelers checks are reccomended anywhere you travel. They are also reccomended if you want to carry a good sum on cash on you. The travelers checks come mighty handy there just in case. It is a good precaution.
I have used travellers checks in Japan, but that was 25 years ago...things have changed a bit. Last time I was in Japan, I used regular credit cards (Mastercard/Visa/AMEX) without difficulty. If you don't have credit cards, I suggest a couple of prepaid cards. Most banks issue them, they are the modern equivalent of travellers checks. Travellers checks always annoyed me...the banks charged 1% to issue them. In other words, you were paying them for the privelege of lending them money. Travellers checks were always a bit of a hassle in China and Japan because not many people could read what it said on them. The VISA logo is well understood.
For people who don't speak Mandarin, traveling in China can be a pain. Organized tours take care of all the hassles, so tourists can relax and enjoy China. Travelers should make a list of places they want to visit, and then search for a tour in their price range that goes to most of them.
