Working with wool in a petit-point project dictates that you work with a length of wool that might be 12-18 inches long. Pulling lengths of wool through the canvas strips the fibres from the wool, so you don't want a 'skinny' length close to the needle's eye, to diminish the height of those stitches.

With a length this long, you can roll a tip in between your fingers to find the separation of the ply, then slowly pull the two plies apart down the length of the strand that you want to work.
