Christianity was not originally a Bible-based religion. It focused on Christ, and His teachings were sometimes at odds with those found in the Old Testament. The Bible - before the Reformation - was but one of the Church's traditional sources of authority for Christians. The others were sacred tradition (including oral traditions) and custom. Jesus, and later the first Christians, didn't have Bibles, yet the Church existed. By making the Bible preeminent, Luther focused on authority found in the written word, to the exclusion of the authority found in the institutional church - the same church which initially gathered Biblical books together and authorized them AS the Bible in the first place.
