It depends. If you are filling out a form and there is only so much room for your essay, then probably not. If you are attaching a sheet with your typed essay on it, then definitely give it a title. Also, be sure to put your name at the top of the attached page. These pages can come apart from the rest of your application and the judges will have no idea who the essay belongs to if your name is not on it.

I think you can do an adequate job of selecting the title. One way is to write the outline of the essay then pick a major point or conclusion of the essay and derive a title from that.

Nonfiction essays need a descriptive title that just tells what the essay is about, so make up a title that says what you're talking about in the essay. "Television Dramas" would be fine for a very general essay.
