If it is running at the time it back fires your timing is off about 22 degrees. if it happnes when you are trying to start it then you timing is off 180 degrees.... Your intake valve is open when the spark plug fires.

Normally from an engine backfire. The plug fires when the intake valve is partially open which will explode the fuel in the intake and carb.

The refractory period
The most likely cause of this problem is a flat camshaft on the exhaust side causing the exhaust valve to to open all the way. I had the same problem with mine.
Semiautomatic = when you pull the trigger, it fires one round and automatically reloads the next but does not fire again until the trigger is pressed again.
Follow through
This is a timing issue, check to see if the key on the flywheel has ANY damage, if so replace it, could also be a bad fly wheel ( cracked or keyway rocked out ) or the keyway on the crankshaft is damaged.
