It's the belt the runs and turns all of the necessary engine components like the alternator, AC compressor, engine fan, waterpump, crankshaft, and others as well. It's the same kind of belt as in all engines..except on the Ram all of the components were designed in an alignment so that only 1 belt operates all devices. Hence someone coined "serpentine"...meaning "snakelike". Most engines have more than 1 belt.
I am looking for the diagram for the serpentine belt for a 2006 Dodge Ram quad cab.
You can remove the old serpentine belt on your 2004 Dodge Ram by loosening the tensioner pulley. Put the new serpentine belt on and tighten it with the tensioner pulley.
on the core support
the belt is automatically tensioned by a spring loaded tensioner.

There should me a diagram under the hood somewhere of how to route belt
Serpentine belts have a pulley that is spring loaded. Tension is set automatically when the belt is installed.
To change the fan belt pulley on a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 318 engine, first disconnect the negative battery cable for safety. Next, remove the serpentine belt by releasing the tension from the serpentine belt tensioner. Once the belt is off, unbolt the fan belt pulley from the water pump or alternator, depending on which pulley you are replacing, and replace it with the new one. Finally, reattach the serpentine belt and reconnect the battery cable.
Open the hood and there will be a sticker by the radiator (right above the grill) showing belt routing.
loosen the tent ion on the pulley and the belt should slide off easily
route the belt in the proper order in reference to the catylyst provided on the vehicle, compress the tensioner, and just slip it in place..
