Yes, if you do the DLC mission, Quest 163, you're able to go into the past and give Aquila something that will let him survive the fight with King Godwyn and live as a mortal.
Aquila is your teacher in Dragon Quest 9.
He betrays you so he can get close to King Godwyn so he can kill King Godwyn. In the end King Godwyn kills Aquila.
One of the DLC missions has you go back in time to speak to him. What you say to him allows him to survive the deathblow that later kills him, and he can be recruited, though as a mortal too like your own character.
