Yeah, buddy, it sure does get cold up here in winter. Outside temperatures can get to 15 below zero, THEN you add the effect of the wind. Sometimes the "wind chill" can cause the outside temperature to feel as cold as 45 below zero. Button up that overcoat for sure!!!

Because Chicago lies midway between the north pole so it must be cold :):)
The frost line in the city of Chicago is thought to be 36 inches. The average Chicago winter does not exceed the 36 inch frost line, but extremely cold winters can.
Chicago's cold temperatures can be attributed to its geography, specifically its location near the Great Lakes. The cold air masses coming from the north and the moderating effect of the lakes contribute to the cold temperatures even when the sun is out. Additionally, factors like wind chill and cloud cover can make it feel even colder in the city.
It's spelled "chilly," as in, "The weather in Chicago was chilly." Chili, the food, is spelled as such.
Cities that have cold winters and mild summers are typically found in regions with a continental climate. Examples include cities in the northern United States, Canada, and parts of Europe like Moscow, Chicago, and Stockholm. These cities experience distinct seasons with cold, snowy winters and warm, but not excessively hot, summers.
