Lake Dillon (Reservoir), Dream Lake, Fern Lake, Grand Lake (Reservoir), Tuqoise Lake (Reservoir), Green Mountain Reservoir, Homestake Reservoir are a few of the larger lakes or reservoirs of Colorado.

There are many lakes in Colorado. Many of the larger lakes are actually reservoirs, gathering snowmelt from the winter to provide drinking water, agricultural irrigation water, and industrial water to the large cities that lie east of the Rocky Mountains. Water is pumped through pipes, tunnels, and aquaducts to reach the eastern desert plains from the high mountain regions.

Small, alpine lakes form where snow melts into mountain basins and gulches. For a description of hiking trails to reach some of the remote wilderness lakes in Colorado, read one of the e-book hiking guides available on the subject. Holy Cross Wilderness Area: Northern Trails of Eagle County and Eagles Nest Wilderness Area: Summit County Hiker describes wilderness trails that reach mountain lakes in Colorado.
