It was made by REMINGTON in 1943. you probably have a Colt slide on a REMINGTON frame. this is not unusual. many times different make slides on found on different make frames.....................

It is not stainless steel. My guess is that it was nickeled after it left the factory. A factory nickel piece from 1918 needs to be lettered by Colt.
