No - the expiration dates on most prescriptions are for full potency, though some, like those containing aspirin, shouldn't be used past a certain point after the expiration since they break down and aren't safe.


In general though, if you keep Demerol (Meperidine) and similar drugs in their original containers, and maintain them in storage in a cool, dry environment, their potency will last for many years. For example, military drugs such as morphine from WWII stores are still found occasionally in medical supplies that are still as potent as the day they were packed. Remember it's how the drug is stored that leads to its deterioration - the date is a reference only.

According to the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding, it's stable for 6 months after preparation in the 50-mg tablet form. If you're referring to an injection, however, all I know is it's good for at least 12 weeks, and isn't deteriorated by light like morphine is.
