It's not officially stated in the anime, and even less in the manga (she only gets a few pages of fame), but I think if you read underneath his actions toward her, Gaara truly cares for her in some way. He might have been a little harsh (he pushed her away gently) when she offered to help him stand after he was revived, but I believe that was just a pride thing.
I fully agree... I also want to add the fact that Gaara is always longing for love (love complex, lol =3) and that Matsuri was the one person who chose him, out of the three sand sibs. The fact that she is willing to reach out to him is a big thing, and that more then anything shows that her affection toward him is more then blind fangirlism. I think that his actions clearly show that he cares for her, as a student and as something more. Her willingness to accept him will let him open up like no character could give him the opportunity too. Her personality is gentle enough not to force him to do anything or dominate the relationship (like Sakura), but shes brave enough and has enough courage to draw him out, instead of shying away from his sometimes... er... frightening, more insane moments (like Hinata, perhaps).

Naruto hasn't done anything with his romantic interest, whoever it is... (Sakura, Hinata, Sasuke, etc..... you pick) and Matsuri, no matter how much Gaara does or does not like her, is half filler, half canon character. Masashi Kishimoto-sensei has a long way to go before he can start thinking about pairings, even though the war is coming to an end.

Yes Gaara likes Matsuri. She was the only one who chose him. And in Naruto Shonen jump they take her away and Gaara rushes to get her back. In conclusion Gaara does like Matsuri.

Naruto NEVER punched Gaara in Shippuden. He only did so when they were fighting in a kind of forest. (episode 79) and that's because he had to defend sakura and sasuke (who was beaten up) ***EDIT*** But he did in the 3rd Shippuden movie. To summarize, Naruto was on his way to rescue Kakashi, and Gaara got in his way. ^w^ I kinda don't like how Gaara's portrayed in that movie... but whatever. It's a good movie, anyway, I recommend it. :D
