One distinct tradition Icelanders celebrate is during Christmas. They believe in the Yule Lads who are little men who leave treats in their shoes. Icelanders put their shoes in the window days before Christmas. Shoes are just like stockings. The Yule Lads come and put treats into their shoes and in the morning, they receive them. If they aren't being good, sometimes they will get a potato or coal but if they're really bad, Gryla (the Yule Lad's mother) will come down from her mountain and kidnap the children and maek a stew of them. I believe there are thirteen Yule Lads. Then there is Gryla, her husband and their cat.
