J.K. Rowling has stated that she regrets allowing the American publishers to change the title of the first book from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
At the time, Rowling was a new author and allowed the change because she was happy to be published. She has since said that if she had been in a better position she would have fought against it.
The change was made because the American publisher, Scholastic, believed American children would not understand and would be turned away by the word "Philosopher" and that "Sorcerer" sounded more exciting.
