The Springfield line was sold by Stevens/Savage from about 1920 until the 1940's. If you need a closer estimate of the age, you can get the Stevens Historian's address from savagearms.com and send him $15 and the serial number.

It MAY not have one. Serial numbers are placed on the receiver (frame) of all firearms- legally the receiver IS the firearm- everything else is simply "parts". However, prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act, no law required serial numbers on rifles and shotguns- and most low- middle cost guns HAD no serial number. While it is highly illegal to REMOVE a serial number, if a gun never had one, it is perfectly legal.
