Jesus, who is also called Christ, is a king and ruler of the kingdom of heaven. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him. Therefore He rules over His followers (citizens) in both earth and heaven, those you refer to as "living" and "dead"

Jesus' death itself didn't particularly strengthen his followers. What really strengthened His followers was Him rising from the grave. As you may know from reading the Bible if you do, some of His followers completely denied that they even knew Him. However, when He came back from the dead, they knew that He was the son of God and King of the Jews so they believed and had faith in Him.
