The reason she saw and sawed the hive was because Rue was in a near by tree and pointed them out. Later after this they form an alliance and while Katniss is blowing up the Careers supplies, Rue gets trapped. She is stabbed with a spear by the boy from district 1, Marvel. As he is "shooting" at Rue, Katniss actually kills him with the bow and arrow. (I have read the book and seen the film, same goes for both.)
