What is the magnetic field of Mars like?

Mars no longer has a magnetic field. Look at earth for a moment. The earth's magnetic field is generally thought to be the product of dynamo action associated with motion (currents) in the molten fluid core of the earth. Other planets that have magnetic fields are, in general, thought to have this same or a similar source for their fields. Mars no longer has a molten core. Our studies have revealed that there are parts of the crust of Mars that have been magnetized. We see that these areas have a residual magnetic field that has been left as an "impression" of the original magnetic field of the red planet. And that field has changed polarity at different times over the period when Mars still actually had a natural magnetic field and it magnetized portions of the crust. A link to the Wikipedia article on Mars is provided.

Do other planets have magnetic fields?

Yes, all of them do, except for Mars and Venus. Neither Mars nor Venus have a "global magnetic field". Mars has only traces of weak magnetism and Venus is probably even less magnetic.Neither plants nor animals have any significant magnetic field.

How and why did mars lose its atmosphere?

Mars had a molten core that eventually cooled. Causing it to loose its magnetic field allowing solar winds and radiation to "wipe out" its atmosphere.

Can other planets besides the earth have a magnetosphere?

The magnetosphere is the region around a planet where the solar wind is significantly altered due to the magnetic field of the planet. Planets with a magnetic field arising from internal processes are said to have a global magnetic field. A Global magnetic field will produce a magnetosphere. Six of the planets have global magnetic fields, and hence some magnetosphere; Mercury, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Mars did have one, but when the core froze, that ended the geodynamo. Venus, the near twin of Earth, does not have a geomagnetic field and that is quite perplexing. It too lacks a geodynamo and no one knows why. There are remnant magnetic fields for Mars and Venus, but they are too small to have any significant effect on the solar wind. Jupiter and Saturn have huge magnetic fields and there are only general theories as to what causes them. Uranus has a middling magnetic field, more in the range of Earth's field. The moon has no significant field. We have no idea whether Pluto does or not, but it would be unlikely.

Hopw many magnetic fields does Mars have?

Mars does not have a global magnetic field like Earth does. It has remnants of and old global field that may have disappeared 500 million years ago. That would have been the end of protection against the solar wind. It would have stripped the atmosphere off and fried most land life.

Does mars have a gravity magnetic field?

Mars has gravity, as do all planets, but not a magnetic field.

Is the planet Mars non magnetic?

Mars has a magnetic field.

Is mars magnetic field strong or weak?

no mars magnetic field is not strong because it is far away from the sun than earth.

Can earth loose atmosphere when magnetic field changes?

Earth's magnetic field is weaking such as it did on Mars, so are we also going to loose our own atmosphere as mars did?

What is magnetism on Mars?

The magnetic field on Mars is only residual, it collapsed many eons ago.

Why is mars magnetic field really weak?

The exact reason for Mars' weak magnetic field is not fully understood yet, but one possibility is that its core is cooling down and not generating enough heat to sustain a strong magnetic field. Another factor is Mars' smaller size and slower rotation compared to Earth, which may have led to the depletion of its magnetic field over time.

Does mars has magnetic field?

Yes, but it is much less than Earth's.

Why Mars today lacks a global magnetic field like that of Earth?

Mars is much smaller, and therefore contains much less thermal energy. The lesser thermal energy caused Mars to cool faster than the Earth. Without heat in the core, Mars will not generate a magnetic field (the rapidly spinning core is a dynamo of magnetic energy).

What is one fact on Mars?

Mars has virtually no magnetic field because the crust below the surface is so thin.

Can you see the northern lights on Mars?

No. The Northern and Southern lights, called aurora, are the result of Earth's magnetic field funneling high-energy particles from the sun toward the poles. Mars does not have a magnetic field and so does not have aurora.

Are earth and Mars similar?

Yes, they are similar in size, and there is evidence that there was once water, a stabil magnetic field, and an atmosphere on Mars.
