they didnt Ali had a twin no-one knew about. (Courtney) Courtney had mental problems and had to go to a mental centre for mental people but she didn't want to go so she pretended to be Alison, her sister. their parents believed she was Alison and sent the real Alison to the mental center instead of Courtney. so basically the pretty little liars were best friends with Courtney not Alison. Alison escaped from the mental center and was angry at Courtney, i guess she became a little mental from being treated like she was mental for a year. anyway she came and buried Courtney alive at the night of the sleepover as revenge for what happened to her.
