The quantity of a resource is necessarily conservative, for until one has prospected in detail, the real resource is not known. That aside, NZ has about 7 000 000 000 tonnes of coal in NZ of which about 71% are in Southland. The only bituminous coals lie on the west coast of the South island. The most abundant fossil fuel in New Zealand is coal. New Zealand has large coal reserves that are primarily used for electricity generation and industrial purposes. Oil and natural gas reserves are also present in the country, but to a lesser extent compared to coal.
Coal is mostly found on the West Coast of NZ's Upper South Island.

There is no nuclear production in NZ, there is hydro power and some fossil fired power. Electricity in the home is 230v 50 HZ
