The 2013 NCAA men's basketball tournament had teams representing 31 states and the District of Columbia. These are the states which had teams in the tournament: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
Alaska Does Not have A division 1 school but just a few years ago South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota and North Dakota State University made the jump to Division 1. Only NDSU out of the three teams has made it to the Big dance.

According to a source at the South Dakota High School Activities Association, the 3 point shot was added to high school basketball for the 1985-1986 season.
The Dakota Wizards were an NBA Development League team located in North Dakota from 1995 to 2012, when the team was moved to Santa Cruz, California and renamed the Santa Cruz Warriors. There are several college basketball teams including a team from the University of North Dakota (NCAA Division I Big Sky Conference) and from North Dakota State University (NCAA Division I Summit League).
