Peter Pettigrew dies in the 7th book The Deathly Hallows, when Harry and the gang are trapped in the Malfoy manor. He is strangled to death by the silver hand Lord Voldemort gives him in the 4th book, when he does not kill Harry, he hand kills him.
Because he owed his life to Harry Potter. When Harry let Pettigrew go in Prisoner of Azkaban (instead of letting Sirius and Lupin kill him), Peter owed a life debt to Harry. In Deathly Hallows, Peter tried to kill Harry but couldn't because Harry saved his life.
