It has smooth muscles in order to support the lungs

It is the role of cartilage to structurally support the trachea so it does not collapse in on itself (pulmonary atelectasis) during inspiration when the pressure in the lungs drops below atmospheric level.

No that is wrong, smooth muscle is controlled subconsciously by the autonomic nervous system, and its function is to constrict or dilate, (by contracting or relaxing respectively), the airways to ease or restrict air flow through them. For example when you exercise, the smooth muscle will relax causing the diameter of the trachea to increase so more air can flow through them and hence allow a greater volume of oxygen to processed as needed by the body for respiration to release energy and provide this to the muscle cells during exercise. However, when one is surrounded by something which one is toxic such as a harmful gas, then the smooth muscle may contract and constrict the airways to reduce airflow and thus the amount of this toxic substance from entering the lungs and damaging the lung tissue.

Yes, smooth muscle is found around the bronchi. It can relax or contract. It does this so that the airways can constrict, decreasing the diameter of the airways. Smooth muscle is also found surrounding the trachea and the bronchioles.

Bronchi

- large diameter

- cartilaginous

- higher resistance to airflow (than bronchioles)

Bronchioles

- smaller diameter

- smooth muscle cells

- lower resistance to airflow (due to many bronchioles in series)

- fewer goblet cells

No, the Primary Bronchi has more cartilage than the Secondary. As the bronchi continues its path from the Primary to it's end point the amount of cartilage decreases and smooth muscle increases, until eventually there is no cartilage present.

What is the functional importance of the decrease in cartilage and increase in smooth muscle in the lower respiratory passageways?

The smooth muscle in the walls of the bronchioles is very sensitive to the concentration of carbon dioxide. A rising level of CO2 causes the bronchioles to dilate. This lowers the resistance in the airways and thus increases the flow of air in and out.

How many smooth muscles are in the human body?

Smooth muscle tissue isn't divided into specific muscles like skeletal muscle tissue is, but these organs have smooth muscle in them: Stomach Small intestine Large intestine Iris (of the eye) Arrector pili (responsible for goosebumps) Ureters Bladder Parts of the esophagus Blood vessels Bronchi and bronchioles (the airways in the lungs) Uterus

Which respiratory tubes are primarily composed of smooth muscle and affect the flow of air to the alveoli?

There are no smooth muscle lined tubes in the respiratory system. The air is pulled into the lungs when the rib cage expands. The lungs are attached to the inside of the rib cage and move as it moves. Now there are skeletal muscles between the ribs called intercostal muscles. These muscles affect the rise and fall of the ribs during respiration.

The diameter of bronchioles can change because their walls contain?

Smooth Muscle tissue relaxation and contraction is responsible for dilation and constrictions of the bronchioles, respectively.

What are smooth muscles?

Smooth Muscle contractions are regulated by calcium ions. The smooth muscle differs from skeletal muscle in that its contracts from all sides.
