In the late 1980s, the USSR had roughly 53,000 tanks. About half of these were older models in reserve divisions, activated only in case of a large scale war against NATO.

I've read that between 2 and 6 thousand tanks are currently in active service in the Russian Ground Forces, with another 18-20 thousand older models in storage.
