No one has ever liked Severus Snape. Everyone thinks of him as a greasy haired boy that is a trader. Why would Dumbledore ever trust him?

Millions of (real life, not fictional) teenage girls have great crushes on him;) That surprised even the author.

From wikipedia:

In an interview, Rowling described Snape's character as an "antihero". She has said that she drew inspiration for Snape's character from a disliked teacher from her own childhood, and described Snape as a horrible teacher: "the worst, shabbiest thing you can do as a teacher is to bully students."
