According to most accounts, Captain Simon Fraser of Culbokie fathered nine children; one of whom was James Fraser. As reported in the Journal of the Wisconsin State Historical Society,James Fraser was born in upstate New York near Bennington, VT.

His father, a fervent Royalist, died in an American prison after having been captured by the Americans during Burgoyne's defeat in a battle fought in and near Hoosick, NY.

Simon Fraser was born in 1776, and as quoted in the Wisconsin article, James was born a year earlier as recorded in the baptismal records of St.Gabriel's Catholic Church.
