The Duke of Soleanna performed experiments on the Flame of Hope which resulted in the creation of Mephiles and Iblis. Putting out the Flame meant that the accident occurring during the Solaris Project would never have occurred, leaving the Flames of Disaster no longer needing to be sealed within Elise, and resetting the timeline.
Who is princess Elise?
Princess Elise the third is the sovereign of Soleanna, she was kidnapped by Eggman in Sonic 06 for she had the Flames of Disaster sealed within her which would be released if she ever cried. She is hated by many fans as she kissed Sonic to revive him at the end of Sonic 06. Thankfully since Sonic reversed the events this never happened.
