Does Toby really kill himself in the Pretty Little Liars books series?

In the book he does die because he took some pills and overdose on purpose because Emily wouldn`t love him.

In the T.V series he doesn`t die. He totaled his motorcycle to make it look like he died. But after he comes back and tells the truth to Emily. He appears in the back seat of her car. He tells her that they can`t talk there, because someone is watching and tells her to meet him at a church because before midnight. He also tells Emily not to call the cops because he is innocent. Emily discusses this with her friends even though Toby tells her not to tell ANYONE) and choses to call the cops on Toby. The cops receive an "anonymous" tip and catch Toby where Emily said he would be. But i think that Emily didn`t call the cops on him. I think it was A. But whatever. Toby gets taken to jail.
