No, they did not. The 1988 would have had the 4T60 transmission and the 1998 would have had the 4T65-E transmission. They are related, being that they're both GM 4-speed automatics designed for a front-wheel-drive layout but they are not the same. In the 1990s the 3800 V6 the Lesabre used saw upgrades in power and torque so a heavier duty transmission was needed to handle that extra power.
