No,
The engine computer is in charge of timing.
It has a timing chain. I don't know the answer to the latter part of the question, sorry. I've actually had the same issue finding true engine specs, not just the basics and the interior features!
4.0L I6-NO 4.7L V8-NO 3.1L Diesel-NO 2.7L Diesel-NO It would have a chain.
Timing is controlled by the computer and is not adjustable. The distributor, if equipped, is set to 0 degrees with the scan tool. This can not be done with a timing light.
the 4.7 v8 has 3 timing chains, i am not sure of manufactures rec, but i do know that if a chain goes, you can kiss the motor good bye. i would recomend all 3 anywere from 150000 kms to 200000. could be a pricey job. tensioners, guides, etc.

No, this is an interference engine. You will have severe engine damage if the belt breaks.
Yes...Well it is an interference engine, not zero clearance. Which means when the timing belt breaks the pistons with "interfere" with the valves.
Parts like, valves/pistons/etc are no longer synchronized when a timing belt breaks. Often belts will stretch to merely "jump time" so parts no longer have the clearance necessary for safe movement.
Not one penny. The 1996 Jeep Cherokee does not have a timing belt. It has a timing chain.
If the timing belt breaks the engine will just stop.No other damage will happen, there is clearance between the valves and the pistons. This happened to me. And I just rebuilt my 93 Geo convertible it had over 255,000 mi. It is a great little engine
