For some companies, no actual previous training or schooling is necessary, they will teach you every thing you need to know, an apprenticeship. No formal education is required, but it never hurts to receive a degree as a pastry chef for those who plan on going far with designing and creating cake, which sometimes goes beyond cake and icing, and into working with fondant, sugar, or chocolate. Having a degree and the knowledge from a university or trade school can give you an advantage over competition. You can usually take classes at art and craft stores, such as Michaels. If you are looking for a job, you local grocery store is probably the best place to start, as it isn't as demanding as a mom and pop Bakery.

A college degree never hurts. Does a cake decorator need one? I would say not necessarily.

More detail:

No, you definitely do not need a college degree to be a cake decorator. I was a cake decorator long before I ever went to college. You don't even have to have any formal training in it - you just need the talent and desire to learn. I learned by books, specifically the Wilton books.

As long as you deliver quality cakes, that's all you really need. But if you plan to do it commercially, as in setting up a business for it, you will need to be licensed by the city or county. But you can also do it out of your home without the license if it's only a part time or side line business, and you only do a few each month.
