The hummingbird has an extremely fast metabolism. It lives on the edge of survival. It has adapted in many ways. A hummingbirds has so sense of smell but a very keen eyesight. It can spot its food by seeing brightly colored flowers.These are the flowers that have co-evolved with the hummingbird. They have the high nectar count need by the hummingbird to survive. The hummingbird pays back the favor by pollinating these flowers. It has evolved to have a long beak.This makes it easy to access the nectar from these same brightly colored flowers which generally are tubular in shape. Another adaptation of the hummingbird is its tongue. It has a special forked tongue that allows it to get nectar. Flight is a marvelous adaptation of the hummingbird. It can fly forward, backward, upside down and hover in place. This allows the bird to get nectar from flowers. Hummingbirds also have a semi-hibernation state called Torpor. When weather is cold or there is a lack of food supply , hummingbird will go into torpor in order to stay alive.
