Freon is a registered trademark, and does not apply to all refrigerants. What refrigerant your vehicle uses depends on model year. 1995 or newer will use R-134a. Vehicles older than 1995 will mostly use R-12 - while the first R-134a systems were introduced in 1992, they were not mandated until 1995. Check the schrader valves on your AC system. If there are threads on the outer portion, it is (or originally was) an R-12 system. It is possible that a R-12 system was retrofitted for R-134A - a refrigerant purity test done by a shop will be required to determine this.
you use freon to cool your car and make the air conditioner work
Air conditioners manufactured between 1970 and 2010 use Freon as a coolant. Freon is scheduled to be phased out of usage by 2020. Newer air conditioner models use a different type of coolant.

Is it feasible and approximately how much will it cost to replace the air conditioner in my '91 Miata with a unit that does not use freon?
The 1994 Toyota uses are R-136 Freon. The air conditioning compressor Freon capacity is five pounds. The manufacturer recommends you never overfill the air conditioner compressor.
Compressor ice cream makers use a refrigerant liquid like in a refrigerator or air conditioner. Older units did use freon as the refrigerant, but that is now banned.
Only if that is what is was built and designed to use.Only if that is what is was built and designed to use.
Depends on the air conditioner. Older units use a form of Freon that is no longer manufactured, and you cannot buy it. Some window type units are sealed, and have no provision to add refrigerant. Your best bet will be to talk with the service staff at a local heating and air conditioning company.
