A gum shield is just another name for a mouth guard. These can be used when playing sports. In sports they will help protect your teeth form getting hurt. Other gum shields are use to help prevent snoring.

It doesn't really matter to be honest. I'm 16 and play without a gum shield. I have bad teeth and have had since before I played rugby, and can't get a shield to properly fit me. It's all down to what your comfortable with but I would recommend Shock Doctor gum shields as they come with insurance if you break your teeth while wearing them and they will pay your dental bill. How do you boil a gumshield?
It would normally tell you in the instructions but for whatever reason if you do not have them then all you do is put boiling water in a bowl, enough water for the gum shield to be fully submerged, then carefully put the gum shield in and wait about 2 - 3 minutes. By this time it should be soft and flexible then you put it in your mouth and bite down and mold it against your teeth then leave it to cool and go hard then your ready for action :)

if you mean a mouthpiece yes, dip in boiling water for 35 sec. then dip in cool water not ice water for 3 sec. bite down then in the boiling water for 10 sec. then cool water for 1 sec. and bite down and press you tongue up and pus it against your teeth
