they are easy to lose and a child may not cope well with it, if you could keep it safe it would be a good idea **Both make good pets for this age if the animals are young. Older ones can have a tendency to bite when handled a lot and children like to (and should) handle them a lot. Make sure you teach the child to handle securely, but yet gently and this will help with training the animal trust when handled.

Well I think hamsters are better for kids because they are active and love to come out and play. On the hand mice bite and they are really stinky or so I think a hamster is better because it is more niceer but if your kid doesn't want to play with a the mice a lot and won't care if the mice bites him/her and he/she don't want something to playful get a mouse! But I think it would be better to get 1 hamster or 2 dwarf hammys! Here is some info on hammys: 1.Dwarfs don't like being alone but Syrains like to be alone 2.They are really nice 3.They love to come out every evening 4.Change the cage every 2 or 3 weeks 5.Their cage doesn't have to be to big but atleast not to small so they can't run around and have a wheel 6.Love them and care for them! 7.Hope you have fun if you get 2 dwarfs or 1 Syrian!

I am 10 and own a Guinea pig. I would say a guinea pig because they are mor active and hamster is nocturnel. Guinea pigs whistle when they want attention and are better being handeled then a hamster. GPs love to cuddle! They grow very affectionate of their owners. so overall, I would say a guinea pig.

P.S. clean their cage 2 a week

depends on how gentle he /she is. if he or she is not gentle a hamster might not be the best pet since they are extremely fragile if he/she is, a hamster is a great pet. guinea pigs not that fragile so if who you are getting it for is not careful this one is the best option.

It really just depends on what the owner wants.

Gerbils cost around $10 and live 3-4 years.

Hamsters are about $10 also, and live 1-3 years.

I would recommend a gerbil since it is the same price as a hamster and lives longer.

Although most 9-year-olds call their gerbil a hamster anyway.

Hope I helped :)

Well, to be honest, you should definitely buy him the hamster for many reason:

1. Hamsters are less expensive and probably better for handling.

2. Hamsters are more playful and interesting to watch.

3. Guinea pigs poo quite a lot, so if you want to save time cleaning up...

4. Guinea pigs have larger teeth and might bite if provoked or held for quite some time. Since the hamster's teeth are smaller it's probably safer for your 6 year old to handle them.

Just wanted to share my opinion because I got my first hamster when I was 6 and I absolutely loved him. Currently, I have a guinea pig and I find that they're not as entertaining as hamsters are.

Not at all. Guinea pigs are a living being, and a huge responsibility. Not something to give to your child to neglect.

What should you look for when buying a pet dwarf hamster?

Well, the hamster should be very active and running around the cage they have at the pet store. If the hamster is in the corner or is in the igloo house, then that may not be the best choice. For example, the hamster could be on the hamster wheel, that's a good choice!
