The letter A as a letter has the long A : "the letter A is the vowel in cat"

The use of A as an article (a boy, a plan) can be pronounced as a long A (ay) or a short schwa sound (uh). For example, "we saw a bird" is correct either way, but may have different connotations. The long A may sound odd in some cases.
