It depends on the liar. Some people who weave multiple lies around themselves might get lost in the fantasy that they are real and convince themselves of them. This is more likely to be the case if the lies are to make themselves look better than they are or feel more important. It is less likely in the case of someone simply lying to get out of trouble. For instance if someone lies and says they were at work while they were really cheating on a spouse, its highly unlikely that they believe this lie. But if someone says they are well traveled when they have never left their town, they might, after telling multiple stories about their adventures, start to feel and believe them, themselves.

One set of lies is purely selfish. The other is mainly based on low self esteem.
