It depends on what you mean by "education". I suppose the short answer is no. There are plenty of musicians who attended universities and specialized colleges and received their degrees in music and did not become successful. Likewise, there are just as many who never even finished high-school nor had any formal training are still made it. The music industry can be split into 2 categories; talent & networking, and it's hard to make it on just one. So the long answer is it's best to have not only an all-around good education, but also some advanced study in your music related area.
