I'm sure the dog would appreciate a little warmth during his walk (assuming you live somewhere rather cold; if you reside in Florida or South Carolina, then your pooch is fine.). But, so long as it's not too terribly cold, your dog will be fine without. Just don't make the walk too long.
I say it can walk up to 10 miles if well hydrated and if it exercises every day then it should be fine to walk long distances
