Most symphonies have four movements, although composers are free to give their symphonies as many or as few movements as they like.

The classical symphony as perfected by Haydn and Mozart almost without exception consisted of four movements. Beethoven connected the third and fourth movements of his 5th Symphony. Since that time it has varied more. For instance, Samuel Barber's first symphony is in one continuous movement with four differing sections. Cesar Franck's is probably the most famous three-movement symphony.

Usually only so-called "classical" symphonies have four movements (though these symphonies need not be from the classical era). Many composers have written many symphonies with differing numbers of movements: Samuel Barber's "Symphony in One Movement" (Op. 9) has, naturally, only one movement; Dmitriy Shostakovich wrote his Symphony no. 14 (Op. 135) with eleven movements.

Any self-respecting composure would make sure that it did. However there are some that have varying numbers. For example Schubert's Unfinished symphony has only three.
