Big disclaimer: we do not recommend the "taste test" for unknown chemicals. If you don't know exactly what it is or are not sure that it is non-toxic and non-corrosive, do not taste it.

That out of the way... acids tend to taste sour; bases tend to taste bitter. Some common acids that you can eat (small quantities of) without killing yourself are vinegar (dilute acetic acid; do NOT try tasting concentrated/glacial acetic acid), vitamin C (ascorbic acid), citric acid, and carbonated/soda water (carbonic acid). Soda water tends to taste more salty than sour, because it's not pure carbonic acid; it contains a sodium salt, and salts tend to taste (surprise!) salty. (Again: do not taste random salts, because many of them are toxic. The one in soda water is sodium hydrogen carbonate, commonly known as baking soda, which is fairly innocuous.)
