One of the accomplishments is that he reached China
The name of Marco Polo's mother is not recorded in any surviving record for the period and therefor is unknown. Little is known about her other than she died when Marco was a boy.
Marco Polo wasn't sponsored by any country. His father was a rich merchant from Venice, Italy and Marco, his father, and uncle paid their own way to China. His father had all ready been there once so when they arrived they were welcomed. Marco was 17 when he arrived with his father and stayed there many years.
He only briefly passed through China and he had no objectives with any of the people he came across. Besides, there was nothing for China to learn from Europe. Europe just barely emerged from the Dark Ages and Marco was one of their first explorers.
Getting to know people on a personal level.
Yes, Marco Polo had two brothers, named Maffeo and Niccolò. They were Venetian merchants who traveled with Marco to Asia and served as his companions and business partners during their explorations. Marco Polo's father, Niccolò Polo, was also a merchant and had a brother named Maffeo Polo, who was likely the namesake for Marco's brother.
Marco Polo was an important figure in the 13th century because he was the first to make a map of eastern Asia.
