sorry for the bad news but you will not find a timing digram for a 4.0 liter SOHC. There are no timing marks on either of the cams. To set the cam timing, you need to have Ford Special Service Tools to hold the Cam shafts into place and to hold the crank on top dead center. I was able to borrow the tools for this job from a local ford dealer since i was freinds with an employee. Even worse is if you need to replace the timing chain on the RH side you have to remove the engine. the bolts the hold the timing gear and the chain giuds are behind the bell housing.
go to advance auto and for 20.00 get a ford explorer repair manual , it has the diagram in it, also the owners manual has a diagram also .
The 2001 Ford Explorer Sport V-6 has a timing belt. Ford engines have not use a timing chain since the 1980s.

Is this a trick question ? ( The 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with the 4.0 L - SOHC - V6 engine has 3 timing chains - first year of pick-up body style in Ford Explorer line-up )
In a 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac : The 4.0 liter Single Over Head Cam , V6 engine has ( 3 timing CHAINS ) The 4.6 liter V8 engine has ( 1 timing CHAIN to each cylinder head , so there are 2 timing CHAINS )

On a 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac : The 4.0 litre SOHC , V6 engine has ( 3 timing CHAINS ) The 4.6 litre V8 engine has ( 2 timing CHAINS )
