As soon as Titus and the boys and Eucleides entered the city through the Capena Gate, Sextus shouted, "What will we do first? Where will we go to? Will we visit-?"

"Where will you lead us to, uncle?" interrupted Marcus. "Will we see the Senate House and the Forum? Sextus has heard and read many things about Rome and now, uncle, he wants to see everything."

Titus said, "Silence! Silence! Tomorrow we will visit the Forum. Tomorrow, Eucleides, it will be allowed to lead the boys there. Then there will be enough time. Today however, boys, I will take you all home through the city and I will show you everything on the journey."

Already they had arrived at the Circus Maximus, which was not away in the distance. Sextus was amazed when he saw the mass of the Circus Maximus. Marcus was also amazed, although he had seen the Circus before. Titus was also astonished, not by the mass, but by the silence of the circus.

"Alas! Alas!" said Titus. "Today the Circus is closed. In three days however the emperor himself, Titus Flavius Vespasianus, will make the magnificent games."

"Surely you will lead us there?" asked Marcus.

"Alas! I will not be able to take you, "says Titus. "Perhaps Eucleides will take you."

"No" replied Sextus. "Eucledies likes books, not games!"

"Come on, boys!" interrupted Titus.

"We will not go around the Palatine Hill and through the Arch of Tiberius, we will enter the Forum. Perhaps we will meet your father, Marcus. Soon the senators will leave the Senate House."

Therefore leaving behind the Circus and went around the Palatine Hill.

More wine was brought and garlands of flowers were given to all the guests. One of the company, whose name was Messalla, shouted: "Who will be elected judge of drinking?" (a person who was, among other things, responsible for deciding the ratio of wine to water in the drinking wine).

"Not you, for sure, Messalla" says another. "The others are drinking wine without water, but you are drinking water without wine."

Whereupon Messalla (says) "Why not Gaius himself? Who is wiser than Gaius? For he will mix water and wine wisely and he will not let the guests drink too much wine."

"Not at all!" objects Titus in a loud voice. Let us not choose the judge in this way. Bring dice! The judge of drinking cannot be chosen correctly except with dice."

For a short while everybody was silent. Then Gaius (said): "It shall be so! Bring dice! Everything must be done correctly."

Therefore, after the dice-box was brought, the dice were placed on the table. The dice were first thrown by Gaius. "It is Senio!" (a single six) was shouted by everybody. Then one of the guests let go the dice. "Canis!" (all exposed numbers are the same) everybody shouted with laughter. The dice were cast in the same way, but nobody threw Venus (all four dice fall to expose different numbers).

At last Titus snatches the dice and places them with great care inside the dice-box. "I call on my Hercules" he says. Then he shakes the dice-box violently. Everybody watches attentively. Suddenly the dice are tossed.

"It is Venus!" Titus exclaims. "I have won! I have won! Hercules favours me! Now it is time to drink. I order two parts of water and three parts of wine." However, he snatches first the undiluted (wine) and consumes his drink. "I wish you well, Gaius!" he cries and immediately drains his drink. "I wish you well, Messalla!" he cries and drains his drink again. Suddenly he fell over.

"Not well for you, Titus!" says Gaius. Alas! You have drained too much wine." The slaves carry off Titus, caught unawares by the wine. Titus was the worst judge of drinking of all.
